The Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility - SARAF will be a multi-user facility for basic research (e.g. nuclear astrophysics, radioactive beams), medical and biological research, neutron based non-destructive testing (using a thermal neutron camera and a neutron diffractometer) and radio-pharmaceuticals research, development and production. SARAF design is based on a continuous wave (CW), proton/deuteron RF superconducting linear accelerator with variable energy (540 MeV), high current (5 mA) and hands-on maintenance. Phase I of SARAF consists of a 20 keV/u ECR ion source, a low energy beam transport section, a 176 MHz 4-rod RFQ, a medium energy (1.5 MeV/u) transport section, a superconducting module housing 6 half-wave resonators and 3 superconducting solenoids, a diagnostic plate a beam dump and a temporary beam line for targets development and low energy studies. SARAF Phase-I linac is the first high CW current, superconducting low-b linac in operation since 2008 and it is presently delivering routinely CW 4 MeV proton beams in the mA range. Phase II will include additional superconducting modules and is now under re-design. The project status, the operational experience and the future goals of SARAF will be described.
